Just over a thousand miles in, mostly road and gravel. I may have under 5 rides in on my Raijin since I changed it over to a single speed. Family and work have taken precedent. That is not a bad thing. Winter kind of sucked the motivation out of me this year. <br />

I have just returned from a week on St. Thomas and am stoked to get back to a proper training plan, whatever that means for a guy with a three year old and a two year old, lol!<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QgrUhCHamFQ/VTatGPg2PnI/AAAAAAAAAfA/BraAkbgJXKo/s640/blogger-image--990159855.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QgrUhCHamFQ/VTatGPg2PnI/AAAAAAAAAfA/BraAkbgJXKo/s640/blogger-image--990159855.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
I need a plan and hoped to work on that while sitting on the sandy beaches, but a few too many Heineken slowed me down a bit mentally. That's okay though. I came up with a goal to try and get to 190 lbs and kiss the Clydesdale class goodbye. It's going to take a lot of work and mental dedication. 20 lbs seems like a lot, but just a few life adjustments could get me there. Only time will tell. Wish me luck and send positive vibes my way. Time to go to work!<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-OzFUXnHoR5U/VTatHPIAQyI/AAAAAAAAAfI/FUMxyd8AV1Q/s640/blogger-image-1197011303.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-OzFUXnHoR5U/VTatHPIAQyI/AAAAAAAAAfI/FUMxyd8AV1Q/s640/blogger-image-1197011303.jpg" /></a>Jason Pryorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09063148319341174898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-860520220174533286.post-30290736263417107132014-08-04T16:16:00.001-07:002014-08-04T16:16:31.652-07:00Tall Oak 6hr (duo)Rain on second half of first lap.<br />

I signed up for the Cat 2 40-49 age group. I did not know what to really expect when it came to going head to head with some of the guys I see on the trail all the time. All I can say is I have left plenty of room for improvement. First thing learned; don't show up for a race with a bike that is not race ready. During my pre-ride early in the week I had dropped my chain around 7 times in two laps. The race was two laps and I dropped my chain five times. I also knocked off my stem captain with my daughters picture on it. I spent some time looking for it, telling my self I was not going to leave the woods with out her. The most frustrating thing about the chain drop situation was that I had to pass the same group of riders so many times. <br />
<br />
The second thing I learned is that I am in no real "race" shape whatsoever. Greensfelder is a tough course that will test all your skills. I was up for it from the general bike handling aspect of things. The trouble came in the ole high intensity aspect of racing. A few time I felt the pain down in the gut that only a hard, to the limit effort can give you. The feeling was both nice and worrisome, seeing that it came when I was trying to chase on the lead group half way through the first lap. Nice because it had been a while since I had that feeling, but I was not sure if it was going to subside or not. Not soon after the rock garden I began to feel better but it was really too late. The race had already passed me by.<br />
<br />
I went back out for my second lap and pushed hard. I began to see many familiar faces and was glad to be back with such a good crowd racing my bike. I ended up 8th out of 19 on the day. I can't complain seeing that I probably posted higher in the results than I deserved with all the chain issues that I was having. A great way to spend a Saturday afternoon with a bunch of like minded Jerks.<br />

Stuck mainly to bike trails in Busch, they are grading many of the roads and they need to be beat down a bit by the autos. Keith and I met Sarge Stitz at the social log and turned the pedals to the tune of 30 mixed surface miles. I love my cross bike because of its versatility. The KATY had seem some flood waters from the Mighty Missouri. She had deposited some mud and sand on course so we had stretches of bumpy surface but all tree damage was cleaned up. Temps were great and it was nice to be in the saddle for a couple hours with some company for a change.<div><br></div><div>Pics:</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TkT4nW3k8Ec/UbM5V8sQfSI/AAAAAAAAAbM/a5HsasX92Ak/s640/blogger-image-69366260.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TkT4nW3k8Ec/UbM5V8sQfSI/AAAAAAAAAbM/a5HsasX92Ak/s640/blogger-image-69366260.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-20To7chcvGg/UbM5YXFwPDI/AAAAAAAAAbc/noKgQbmSIgU/s640/blogger-image--913492888.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-20To7chcvGg/UbM5YXFwPDI/AAAAAAAAAbc/noKgQbmSIgU/s640/blogger-image--913492888.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-UCKV1XD_oHQ/UbM5UsujkCI/AAAAAAAAAbE/Q_AuygJbwGw/s640/blogger-image-1750414749.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-UCKV1XD_oHQ/UbM5UsujkCI/AAAAAAAAAbE/Q_AuygJbwGw/s640/blogger-image-1750414749.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-q3glp4CWO8Q/UbM5Xc-u3iI/AAAAAAAAAbU/ozESKq_GuFc/s640/blogger-image-1424928917.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-q3glp4CWO8Q/UbM5Xc-u3iI/AAAAAAAAAbU/ozESKq_GuFc/s640/blogger-image-1424928917.jpg"></a></div><br></div>Jason Pryorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09063148319341174898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-860520220174533286.post-36434648478990001872013-06-05T19:26:00.001-07:002013-06-05T19:26:08.438-07:00Nothing new to ReportNo ride again today. Rain by the time I got home for work. Maybe in the morning? Weather this year has been a bit disappointing from a cycling perspective. Rain or cold most of this spring. Summer is officially almost two weeks out. My total mileage for the year is beyond minimal. Lost Valley Luau is this weekend but I will probably sit it out. We are busy waiting on a new baby boy to join us. Maybe ICC 9 hour duo? Who really knows? Leg still gives me fits as I have yet been able to find some kind of rhythm. I have been, more or less just cruising, or rambling as I call it, around my 'hood. I never want to be to far from home in case the boy plans on arriving sooner than later. Had a nice night ramble with Davis the other night over to Dad's Bottle Shop in LSL and then cruised all LSL and watched the lake waterfall over the spillway. Good times on two wheels. <div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-iqtzuLpkgbM/Ua_zOvVTreI/AAAAAAAAAas/uHGwAq9hXx4/s640/blogger-image-1002209943.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-iqtzuLpkgbM/Ua_zOvVTreI/AAAAAAAAAas/uHGwAq9hXx4/s640/blogger-image-1002209943.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-mr9aoikq-IM/Ua_zPtdoibI/AAAAAAAAAa0/f9RKMhWDAT0/s640/blogger-image--612817427.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-mr9aoikq-IM/Ua_zPtdoibI/AAAAAAAAAa0/f9RKMhWDAT0/s640/blogger-image--612817427.jpg"></a></div><br></div>Jason Pryorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09063148319341174898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-860520220174533286.post-59921759120389039482013-06-04T18:12:00.001-07:002013-06-04T18:12:29.286-07:00Morning Ramble<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-4DBAj2mLxXo/Ua6QcXLhFLI/AAAAAAAAAaM/PFPN1ST7TQ0/s640/blogger-image--1711675258.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-4DBAj2mLxXo/Ua6QcXLhFLI/AAAAAAAAAaM/PFPN1ST7TQ0/s640/blogger-image--1711675258.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-lyafOUdfb7g/Ua6QdhELCPI/AAAAAAAAAaU/_F9BsI-cr74/s640/blogger-image--1381924659.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-lyafOUdfb7g/Ua6QdhELCPI/AAAAAAAAAaU/_F9BsI-cr74/s640/blogger-image--1381924659.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-eBLdSNjqK8E/Ua6Qe2aKr7I/AAAAAAAAAac/UTdNM7ZXe3U/s640/blogger-image-2046273517.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-eBLdSNjqK8E/Ua6Qe2aKr7I/AAAAAAAAAac/UTdNM7ZXe3U/s640/blogger-image-2046273517.jpg"></a></div><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-lyafOUdfb7g/Ua6QdhELCPI/AAAAAAAAAaU/_F9BsI-cr74/s640/blogger-image--1381924659.jpg"></div><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-4DBAj2mLxXo/Ua6QcXLhFLI/AAAAAAAAAaM/PFPN1ST7TQ0/s640/blogger-image--1711675258.jpg"></div>Went on a ramble this morning through Busch Wildlife. Time to start fresh with new goals and plans for 2013. I did not make it down to the Ranch Ride this year. The temps of high of 25 degrees scared me away. Those temps for winter riding are quite excellent, but for me the problem is in the facts of having to get my gear ready while standing next to the car in those temps. By the time I get ready to ride I would have been too cold to enjoy the use of my hands. Last time I checked, hands are a very important part of mountain biking. So I choose option two. Busch. Living so close to Busch gives me the luxury of standing in my house until I am ready to clip in. <br />
<br />
Last year I bought some bar mitts. These things work wonders. There are many different styles and kinds. I went to an atv/moto shop and bought mine for under $25. I have seen bike specific ones on the net for considerably more. They are a little large and bulky but I have found that I can use them on both my straight bars for mTb or my drop bars for my cross bike. <br />
<br />
The snowy was crunchy but easy enough to break through with out having to mash your brains out. Don't get me wrong though. The places where no one had hiked or driven put a little stress on the heart and legs. The roads were super packed from the car traffic and actually seemed smoother than just the normal gravel. I spent an hour and a half just cruising the gravel and off-beaten tracks around Busch. I saw a lot of orange. I did not know that many folks found it so much fun to walk around on New Year's Day a blasting things.<br />
<br />
I also took some time to look at next years race schedule. I have a few ideas of what I will be doing up and through May. June is a big question mark for me now. The baby will come sometime in June so I doubt u will be doing any traveling. I hope all had a great New Year and wish you the best in 2013.<br />
<br />
Happy New Year<br />

The night temperatures were mild and the lack of moisture and freeze/thaw taking place made for some hero dirt. New corridors in and around Busch have been accessed. Quite honestly, the riding early to mid-month was spectacular. <br />
<br />
As of late it has been all work and no play. The lack of riding has put me up 7lbs. This is the time of year where I get few days off, the food I eat is horrible for me, and I don't hydrate near enough. I seriously can't wait for the New Year. I am planning at least two long rides a month all winter. The rides will either be Ozark Trail based or my supercross rides (as I like to call them). <br />
<br />
Next year I will be pushing towards my 40th year on the earth. My goal is to be in the best shape of my life. I have a new baby on the way come June. I have one baby that is getting ready to turn one in February. Life really could not get much better. Finding time to be healthy will have to take a priority to other things in life. Maybe that post-ride beer will have to wait...<br />
<br />
Here are some pics of the months activities:<br />

So in the last few weeks I have done quite a bit of just riding around. The Berryman Epic sent me on a 115 mile 'new bike' week. The new Raijin thrashed some serious singletrack. Trails encountered include the Berryman trail, the Courtois section of the Ozark Trail, Council Bluff, Johnson Mountain, Lost Valley and Matson Hill and don't forget to throw in some Busch Wildlife for good measure. Not bad for a weeks worth of sunsets. Then, after the time change, I logged about 50 miles of night riding on the new frame. Here are a few images of the festivities.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-W7Y1m07lRMc/UKhfR6qUO1I/AAAAAAAAAVw/QLrpi8jObrs/s640/blogger-image--813773710.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-W7Y1m07lRMc/UKhfR6qUO1I/AAAAAAAAAVw/QLrpi8jObrs/s640/blogger-image--813773710.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-HFW3k1h1QzI/UKhfSDE-ewI/AAAAAAAAAV0/kASaUGof0oU/s640/blogger-image-1014155954.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-HFW3k1h1QzI/UKhfSDE-ewI/AAAAAAAAAV0/kASaUGof0oU/s640/blogger-image-1014155954.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-oM47zkUw7HE/UKhfSk8LszI/AAAAAAAAAV8/heDAOgm4aEc/s640/blogger-image--710478251.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-oM47zkUw7HE/UKhfSk8LszI/AAAAAAAAAV8/heDAOgm4aEc/s640/blogger-image--710478251.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1hLSG2IUAug/UKhfTG2-vkI/AAAAAAAAAWE/N4Xgupv_18A/s640/blogger-image--145139011.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1hLSG2IUAug/UKhfTG2-vkI/AAAAAAAAAWE/N4Xgupv_18A/s640/blogger-image--145139011.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-9X_nwCzG0PM/UKhfToWpdDI/AAAAAAAAAWQ/TX5wkiHkHD0/s640/blogger-image-565471223.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-9X_nwCzG0PM/UKhfToWpdDI/AAAAAAAAAWQ/TX5wkiHkHD0/s640/blogger-image-565471223.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-w4BZSoEKYL0/UKhfT5NHbwI/AAAAAAAAAWU/JchT-XSr6nM/s640/blogger-image--904403022.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-w4BZSoEKYL0/UKhfT5NHbwI/AAAAAAAAAWU/JchT-XSr6nM/s640/blogger-image--904403022.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-s08vHRwzL58/UKhfUD-r-3I/AAAAAAAAAWg/6VEPovxxWxc/s640/blogger-image--1667817241.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-s08vHRwzL58/UKhfUD-r-3I/AAAAAAAAAWg/6VEPovxxWxc/s640/blogger-image--1667817241.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-nAUed-1R3E8/UKhfUvULcPI/AAAAAAAAAWo/MciQvDwHsLQ/s640/blogger-image-1029626904.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-nAUed-1R3E8/UKhfUvULcPI/AAAAAAAAAWo/MciQvDwHsLQ/s640/blogger-image-1029626904.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-4xwWbxtYZgA/UKhfVLHsL1I/AAAAAAAAAWw/UhOO3gHRifw/s640/blogger-image--753493004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-4xwWbxtYZgA/UKhfVLHsL1I/AAAAAAAAAWw/UhOO3gHRifw/s640/blogger-image--753493004.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-IyqcOE6SZVM/UKhfVru7MbI/AAAAAAAAAW0/sJLYF-z7cLU/s640/blogger-image-884616468.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-IyqcOE6SZVM/UKhfVru7MbI/AAAAAAAAAW0/sJLYF-z7cLU/s640/blogger-image-884616468.jpg" /></a></div>Jason Pryorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09063148319341174898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-860520220174533286.post-17439863582788917742012-11-01T19:44:00.001-07:002012-11-01T19:46:15.959-07:00BT EpicThe BT Epic was a race that I did not have on my list of things to do this year. Good friend Brian Busken decided that he would come in town from the PNW and do the race so I capitulated. The plan was made to head down and have a good time with good friends in our National Forest.<br />
<br />
Keith Weinkein made the arrangements at Bass' River Resort for our lodging. The four of us, Courtney Green included would be holed up in cabin 14 for the duration. <br />
<br />
The race to Berryman Campground went as planned and I was feeling decent except for my knee that I bashed on my stem. I had just built up my new bike for this weekend with the help of Gino and The Hub. The Kona Raijin. A Ti frame hand made in Tennessee by Lynsky. The bike rode well with a few adjustments along the way. She still needs to be dialed in a bit. I figure if I can roll 56 miles on a bike I have never ridden before it is going to be a great ride when she is all dialed in.<br />
<br />
Somewhere right after the BC checkpoint I must have kicked up a rock in my front chainring. I had chain suck issues and derailments for the rest of the day. Inspecting the cog later I found a bent tooth.<br />
<br />
From this point on the race definitely went into ride mode. The weather was borderline for me and I struggled keeping my hands warm most of the day, even having to stop at times to stick them down my bibs to get the circulation flowing. I have a condition called Renaud's where the arteries that supply blood to the skin narrow, limiting circulation to the affected areas. It can be painful at times but is more of a nuisance than a disability. But when you can't feel the bars to brake or control your bike you need to stop and warm them up. <br />
<br />
The new section of trail built by the Ozark trail crew was awesome and really help the course flow a bit more towards the end. I ended up finishing in just over 7 hours. I took almost a full hour and a half longer this year. More chill at the checkpoints, chain suck, and the cold hands got the best of me this year. I was just happy to finish and spend some time on the trail with good people. Here are a few pics.<br />

Funny how the next ride after a big effort never seems to get going. I just cruised with a mellow heart rate and enjoyed the leaves and took in the changing of the seasons. Colors have to be getting close to peaking.<br />
<br />
On another note, is anyone else tired of hearing about Lance? He made his way to the top cheating fans and contemporaries alike. He lived a life of power and excess while living the American dream. People cheat, lie, and steal everyday to get ahead in this world, his world just happened to be more influential than most. I think that is what is the real crime here. When someone has that much influence and total power the only next logical step is corruption. So everyone was cheating. Big deal. All pro sports are rife with cheaters. But not everyone can form a corporation of themselves from cheating and lying. So, I am kinda rambling here, but the lesson is simple: stop making sport stars your heroes or role models. Find someone real in your life you can model yourself after. Make your role models tangible, real, and people that can make true change. <br />
<br />
Enough of all this. Here are a few pics from last nights ramble.<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-GaSAAqdTjak/UH72xCfx1zI/AAAAAAAAAUQ/XFe3MB52qf8/s640/blogger-image--1883262569.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-GaSAAqdTjak/UH72xCfx1zI/AAAAAAAAAUQ/XFe3MB52qf8/s640/blogger-image--1883262569.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-XuqxNCqWejc/UH72yTaJ3nI/AAAAAAAAAUY/rCgs5E8T9LY/s640/blogger-image-1619733718.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-XuqxNCqWejc/UH72yTaJ3nI/AAAAAAAAAUY/rCgs5E8T9LY/s640/blogger-image-1619733718.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-F2r3dKwPjnM/UH72zD5igtI/AAAAAAAAAUg/PgoyNfQGZPA/s640/blogger-image--1969366694.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-F2r3dKwPjnM/UH72zD5igtI/AAAAAAAAAUg/PgoyNfQGZPA/s640/blogger-image--1969366694.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1gFCoNFAEss/UH72z5CdfJI/AAAAAAAAAUo/_uUsAzLEnM4/s640/blogger-image-1663425196.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1gFCoNFAEss/UH72z5CdfJI/AAAAAAAAAUo/_uUsAzLEnM4/s640/blogger-image-1663425196.jpg" /></a></div>Jason Pryorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09063148319341174898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-860520220174533286.post-74921195783566176362012-10-15T18:41:00.001-07:002012-10-15T18:48:56.858-07:00Burning at the bluffWell, the race went pretty much as planned, except for the part about the first place team doing so well. <br />
<br />
The Blue Ribbon Boyz only managed to pull off a second place even with Keith taking a timeout to go get some Dos Primos before his third and final lap.<br />
<br />
Still, all in all, it was a good weekend that could have been better but was still great.<br />

Wind was a factor and the pace was near the top off the bat. I was popped off the back as we rolled past the church in St. Paul on the way out to Flatwoods. I can usually hold on until Flatwoods, but not tonight. By the time we took the right heading to Highway Y I was a quarter mile back and decided to slow up and work with a couple of guys in the wind. We took turns pulling and mashed out the rest of the course back and re-grouped in St. Paul. The pace of the ride keeps you on the rivet. I can't sustain that level of HR on a mountain bike ride. HR levels were close or the same as a 3 hr MTB race. And going fast is so much fun. Thanks to the roadies for letting a couple of MTBers sit in.Jason Pryorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09063148319341174898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-860520220174533286.post-45108468762520954242011-06-22T06:13:00.000-07:002011-06-22T06:13:11.616-07:00Fun on Terry RoadFeel like expanding the lungs? How about getting rid of the lactic acid you have laying around? For anyone out there looking for a good cross ride I would like to suggest Terry Road. I forgot how long of a climb it was. Last night was the first time that I have ridden Terry since it was paved. You can take Terry to Duke, left on Duke and drop down Schlursberg (spelling?), and do some fun hill repeats. Then take Duke to F up the old Calloway Fork to D over to Bromm Park and then take the Busch Wildlife cut-thru back towards the mound. Your legs will feel the burn. Until next time....CheersJason Pryorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09063148319341174898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-860520220174533286.post-38641598213457238872011-02-09T16:38:00.000-08:002011-02-09T16:38:21.140-08:00A Hike in the WoodsHiked in some woods near the house last Saturday. A great day to be out. Temps were below freezing and the snow crunched peacefully underfoot. I hiked up on a resting deer and spooked it from about 20 feet away. One big snort at me and it was gone. I need to throw in some big Ozark hikes this spring and slow down a bit and enjoy the woods for what they are worth.<br />

I am both sad to see it coming to a close and happy at the same time. The days are getting shorter which means riding with lights and soon the cooler weather will be pleasant. The summer did not meet the expectations that I set forth this spring. Spring was going well. Fitness was at a new level. Racing was going well, I felt I was getting better with each race. Then in late June I crashed viciously at Greensfelder almost leaving me unconscious. The next four weeks I scarcely touched the bike. The crash had sent my fitness and confidence, especially downhill confidence, in the crapper. By late July I was back riding a couple of time a week and decided to make a new debut at Rapture In Misery. This 6hr race had been on my mind since last year. First place last year left me wanting to defend. This trip to Trenton now turned into survival. Goal: Ride all 6hrs and finish. I did that with much pain and cramping in the legs. I cramped off and on for almost 5 hrs that day but stay determined enough to finish.<br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtQWX_0GWI/AAAAAAAAAOY/SOEg-4jT5tY/s1600/iphone+034.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" px="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtQWX_0GWI/AAAAAAAAAOY/SOEg-4jT5tY/s320/iphone+034.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">6hrs in the book and I was cooked. St. Louis racers had a good showing. Z and Busken came in first and second in the 12 hours solo competition with Mashor being 3rd.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtQb8-M0pI/AAAAAAAAAOg/Ftu1PAJD5q4/s1600/iphone+033.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" px="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtQb8-M0pI/AAAAAAAAAOg/Ftu1PAJD5q4/s320/iphone+033.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtRq9a02pI/AAAAAAAAAOo/uKmNx22NvSA/s1600/iphone+035.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" px="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtRq9a02pI/AAAAAAAAAOo/uKmNx22NvSA/s320/iphone+035.JPG" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">The next race I went for was the Jeff City Single Speed race at Binder Lake. I was the first guy who signed up that actually brought beer. I joked with the promoters about having a class for back of the fast pack or solo rider. I find myself always riding alone in races like these. Not fast enough to keep up with the fast pack, but faster than the not-so-fast group. So I signed up for not-so-fast. I took first place by a couple of minutes and finished somewhere in the top twenty overall. It was a fun day on the bike and good practice for the Tall Oak 6hr that would be held at the same venue Labor Day weekend.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtS83kVCRI/AAAAAAAAAOw/EcEB2a8gJyE/s1600/august+2010+019.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" px="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtS83kVCRI/AAAAAAAAAOw/EcEB2a8gJyE/s320/august+2010+019.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtTQ2isBRI/AAAAAAAAAO4/45LpCiktHbs/s1600/august+2010+021.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtTQ2isBRI/AAAAAAAAAO4/45LpCiktHbs/s1600/august+2010+021.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" px="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtTQ2isBRI/AAAAAAAAAO4/45LpCiktHbs/s320/august+2010+021.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">Feeling better, I set my goal on Tall Oak 6hr as a chance to get through a race and not cramp. Overall, things went well and I spent a great deal of time on the bike and only felt like I was going to cramp near the end. Todd Holtman pulled me through the last couple of laps when my mind was starting to give out on me. I owe him a big thanks for that. I think I finished around 12th out of 30 or so. My times were almost identical to last years times and the lap count was the same. I came to the conclusion that I was at the same point fitness wise as last year. I am finally catching back up after my summer crash.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">Time has been spent recently on the Ozark Trail and at Council Bluff Lake. The ICCC race is being held this weekend and Burning at The Bluff will be on the 9th of October, followed by The Berryman Epic. The season is coming to an end soon. My season has not gone as planned but that is life. Injury and all around bad luck are part of the sport. I just keep riding my bikes knowing that I would rather not be doing anything else. Here are a few random pics from the summer.</div><div align="center" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtW0evseeI/AAAAAAAAAPA/-cTjU8KvZxs/s1600/august+2010+098.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" px="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtW0evseeI/AAAAAAAAAPA/-cTjU8KvZxs/s320/august+2010+098.JPG" width="320" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtXsF63krI/AAAAAAAAAPQ/7cOUjtS5yW0/s1600/iphone+015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" px="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtXsF63krI/AAAAAAAAAPQ/7cOUjtS5yW0/s320/iphone+015.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtW9PhpP9I/AAAAAAAAAPI/woyo3zYCfu4/s1600/august+2010+103.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" px="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtW9PhpP9I/AAAAAAAAAPI/woyo3zYCfu4/s320/august+2010+103.JPG" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtX5NoFW2I/AAAAAAAAAPY/kG-_n94nssI/s1600/september2010+008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" px="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtX5NoFW2I/AAAAAAAAAPY/kG-_n94nssI/s320/september2010+008.JPG" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtYDss7n8I/AAAAAAAAAPg/qOoc2QuRWK0/s1600/september2010+013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" px="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtYDss7n8I/AAAAAAAAAPg/qOoc2QuRWK0/s320/september2010+013.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtYSAWzV3I/AAAAAAAAAPo/UbOu8tjmvcQ/s1600/september2010+014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" px="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtYSAWzV3I/AAAAAAAAAPo/UbOu8tjmvcQ/s320/september2010+014.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtYuBazu9I/AAAAAAAAAPw/piL1ebGwUEg/s1600/iphone+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" px="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtYuBazu9I/AAAAAAAAAPw/piL1ebGwUEg/s320/iphone+001.JPG" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtY1PKJ4zI/AAAAAAAAAP4/kSDA8CtR_KM/s1600/iphone+004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" px="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TJtY1PKJ4zI/AAAAAAAAAP4/kSDA8CtR_KM/s320/iphone+004.JPG" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"></div>Jason Pryorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09063148319341174898noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-860520220174533286.post-5393613506132504052010-06-17T05:23:00.000-07:002010-06-17T05:23:05.973-07:00State Mtb RaceThe location was Castlewood State Park. The class was marathon. State Champion jerseys were on the line. The finish, unknown. I do know that I finished somewhere near the back of the pack. I was lapped by at least five riders. It was nice to think the timing chip thing would go off without a hitch, but that is technology for you. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TBoPObCXPuI/AAAAAAAAAN4/xLaYGXOfdsA/s1600/iphone+071.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" qu="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TBoPObCXPuI/AAAAAAAAAN4/xLaYGXOfdsA/s320/iphone+071.JPG" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Arriving at CW around 8:30 I got out of the car to feel that the heat was already settling in for the day. I was already sweating just pulling the bike off the roof rack. Quickly, Brian Busken and I sat up the team canopy and registered. We decided to do a warm up by riding up Love trail to get loose and shake down the bike. Stitz came along and everyone worked out the kinks. Everthing seemed to be in working order. All lathered up, I decieded to settle under the canopy and concentrate on staying cool. Busken took a trip up Lone Wolf to give his bike the final shakedown on the steep ascent to River Scene Trail.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Satisfied with my preride I took my place on the starting line at the bottom of Lone Wolf. The official gave the countdown and off we went. Well, sort of. Off everyone else went while my gears mashed away in the moist morning air. Gears 2x6/7/8 all of a sudden created chain suck and then a switch to 9 put my chain in the spokes. Time to dismount and yank the chain out of the spokes. During all this the beginner race had started and I had to get out of the way so they could make their way up Lone Wolf. I put the bike in 2x5 and stood pretty much the rest of the climb, passing the beginners, taking a rough line to get around them. I had to ride the first lap under the same conditions, standing on any slight incline. I was not prepared to push so hard so early and found my heart rate pounding near 180 for most the lap, way up in the red zone.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Pitting on my second time through the start/finish area I grabbed a Dos Equis and tried to cool down. I thought about quitting, but changed my mind and just decided to have fun and finish the race. I was so far back I knew I had no chance to be competitive. Caleb adjusted my high/lows and half a XX later I was back on the trail, riding for pride and fun.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TBoRZI8wvYI/AAAAAAAAAOA/GOU5z4zpcfg/s1600/MT-134.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" qu="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1TLmbEJMOIs/TBoRZI8wvYI/AAAAAAAAAOA/GOU5z4zpcfg/s320/MT-134.jpg" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">It was a hard day on the bike. The heat was near unbearable but I made the most of the last couple of laps, even cracking a smile or two here and there. I cheered some riders on and chatted with others. This was my second race of the year, not counting the non-race. I guess I am satisified with the results, finishing that is. I came close to blowing up the first lap while trying to catch the marathon field and think without the mechanical I would have had a more respectable ride. Legs felt okay, but the heat nearly brought my head to a boil. I usually don't mind the heat but that was something else. I think I even overheard someone say they saw the devil looking for a glass of water out there. This week is Lost Valley and the forecast is more heat. I guess I better suck it up and get used to it.</div>Jason Pryorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09063148319341174898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-860520220174533286.post-9627358543570226602010-03-16T17:18:00.000-07:002010-03-16T17:24:57.737-07:00St. Joe Leabbelt XCThe first race of the year began in typical fashion. Rain, mud, and cold temps. The moisture misted down all morning. By race time the sun had poked out just enough to bring up some rumblings from the start finish line and then quickly disappeared. I lined up for my first Single Speed sport race. I had done one six hour race on a single speed last year. Binder Lake is a great spot to ride a single speed.<br />
<br />
So the gun sounded and we were off. The guy who took off in the lead took a horrible line through some trees and we were all zigging and zagging trying to not hit trees and each other. Why he did not lead up the road and then drop in at the trail I will never know. I believe I hit the woods in 3rd, but most likely 4th. The pace was high and the trail was a bog. Two DRJ guys set the pace and I hung on bitterly for the first 3 miles. The mud was too much. I looked down at my heart rate and was pushing 180. I had burned so many matches keeping up through the first two miles of mud I had to reel it in a bit. Two guys passed me at this point. <br />
<br />
The next couple of miles things got better. The feeling of puking on my handlebars started to subside and the trail was getting into some rockier conditions. In fact when the guys in front of me hit the rocky soil before me, I could hear them war-hooping up ahead. Screams of joy quickly turned into concern for another rider.<br />
<br />
I caught up to Loreen Mattson, an expert women challenger, and was following her for a bit of downhill. She knows how to handle a bike in these conditions. Loreen hit a dip and I am not sure if she hit a rock or just washed the tire out and went down hard. I could see two trees about baseball bat size smack her in the upper chest and near the head. I was truly concerned having seen it all from behind. Staying with her until she regained her senses may have put me out of a third or fourth place, but I am not here to win championships and hope that someone would stop to see if I was okay if I was in her situation. She hit those trees so hard that her visor flew off her helmet. I was glad to see she got up and rode on and placed second in her category.<br />
<br />
The race became more of a ride for me at this point. First lap was finished and I could still see some of my challengers in the woods ahead of me. I did not have the desire at this point to chase so I just throttled things back knowing that if I suffered through 3 more miles of mud I could enjoy the last half of the course. There were so many back and forth creek crossings, a ride through a culvert, and some dippidy-doos to be had on the second half of the course. Mike Barro asked me how the race went, I told him "I was only a few minutes off the pace the first lap." Then he asked about the second lap. I said, "More of a nature ride, Mike." He just laughed.<br />
<br />
Caleb Hulsey put in a good show for Momentum, winning Sport 20-29 while Brian Busken ripped out three laps using "The Swede's" training principles. Barro won expert in his age class, racing against himself. Not a bad day, considering. We wrapped up the evening by heading the CB Joe's BBQ near St. Francis State Park. Good BBQ and BIG portions. Overall, I have nothing to complain about. 6TH place in my first SS race. I know my form is not there yet and this was a good gauge to see where I am. Lost Valley is the next test.Jason Pryorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09063148319341174898noreply@blogger.com1
